Patna: Sadique Alam belongs to a poor family but he was determined to be an IAS officer. He cleared UPSC exam three times. First time he cracked India’s top exam in 2007 in first attempt obtaining 445th rank but he was not satisfied and again sat in 2008 to better his rank. Unfortunately his rank fell down from 445 to 595. This did not deter him from trying in 2009 and finally he got 135th rank this year, thus his dream to be an IAS officer came true.

Born to a farmer family in a village in Purnia district of Bihar, Sadique Alam got his elementary education in his village and intermediate from Purnia College. He did graduation from R.P. S. College Patna.

Alam comes from Kulahiya caste which is very backward. Therefore, along with pursuing his education he had made efforts for inclusion of Kulahiya caste in OBCs list from the platform of Kulahiya Development Organization for which he was treasurer for years. In 1998 Kulahiya caste was included in OBCs by central government.

Currently, he is getting training for Indian Revenue Service (IRS) at National Academy of Custom Excise and Narcotics (NACEN) in Faridabad. His two-year training for IRS is about to complete and he was preparing to take charge as custom officer but as UPSC result 2009 announced on 6th May 2010 in which he got 135th rank, now he will undergo training for IAS.

His father Mohammad Mansoor Alam is a farmer and mother Rahima Khatoon is a housewife while his two brothers: Mohammad Qaiser Islam and Jahangeer Alam are teachers at primary school in his village.

In total, 875 candidates (680 male and 195 female) have cleared UPSC this year. Among them, 21 are Muslims. Shah Faesal from Jammu and Kashmir is topper this year.
