Two rival Jamia Millia alumni associations in Riyadh unified

Riyadh: The two rival associations of Jamia Millia Islamia alumni in Riyadh have been dissolved and unified as Jamia Millia Islamia Alumni Association, Riyadh (JMIAA). The unified body has also elected its office bearers last month. The effort for unification was initiated by a secretary of Indian Embassy in Riyadh.

“The two rival associations were functioning in Riyadh for the last two years on parallel basis. Concerned about the existence of rival bodies, third Secretary of Indian Embassy in Riyadh Mr. Hifzur Rahman intervened and successfully negotiated with the office bearers of both the organizations to join together and work for the better cause,” said Laique Ahmad Azmi who was elected as vice president of the unified body. Azmi works as a Manager at Ericsson company. Azmi got 95 votes against 76 for Ahsan Nadvi for the post.

The elections were held on 22nd January at Coco Palm Restaurant in Riyadh. Murshid Kamal was elected as the first president of the unified body with 90 votes. He defeated Mr. Khurshid Anwar who got 74 votes. Dr. Tansir Ahmed was elected as General Secretary, Asif Equbal as Joint Secretary and Sajjad Umair as treasurer.

Besides, eight members were elected for the executive body of JMIAA. They are: Asim Hamdan, Abdul Sami, Dr. Intikhab Alam Ansari, Mohammad Ghazi, Mohammad Imdad Alam Nadwi, Mohammed Raheem, Saleem Akhtar Gaur and Wasiullah Nadwi.

Earlier, a six-member interim body was formed with Shafaatullah Khan, Mohammad Shahabuddin, Mohammad Muneeb, Ghizal Mehdi, Najeeb Qasmim and Salman Azmi as its members to hold the elections for the unified organization in fair, transparent and democratic manner. After the election of new office-bearers, the interim body was terminated.
