New Delhi: While the current academic session is approaching an end, lakhs of students from the minority community in the country have no clue if they were selected for the central government-sponsored minority scholarships meant for the year 2008-2009. So far only Uttar Pradesh and Kerala have published online the list of selected candidates.
The Minority Affairs Ministry, created by the Congress-led UPA government, had launched some minority scholarship schemes to help the poor students of the community to get education. For the year 2008-2009 the ministry has launched three types of schemes. In the pre-matric scholarship scheme the government set a target of 4 lakh scholarships for minority students in all 35 states/Union Territories. By end of March 2009 the government has sanctioned and released funds for 512657 scholarships under this scheme, going much beyond the target.
In the post-matric scheme for the same period the government had set the target of 175000 scholarships. By March end the government sanctioned 150532 scholarships. In the third category of merit-cum-means scholarship, the annual target is 20,000 scholarships. For the year 2008-2009 the government has sanctioned 26195 scholarships, also much higher than the target. This year’s scholarships under this category also include a few hundred scholarships of last financial year 2007-2008 for some states.
While the government has sanctioned and released funds of all scholarships the state governments are yet to declare the list of selected candidates. Websites of most of the states are carrying only data for the year 2007-2008.
Uttar Pradesh and Kerala have published successful candidates of only Post-Matric Scholarships for the year 2008-2009.
