Addressing the 47th Munich Security Conference in the south German city, Merkel said, ‘I believe a very quick election as a start for the democratization process is wrong.’

‘There has to be some orderly transition process in place to avoid a total vacuum of power,’ she added.

Merkel stopped again short of supporting demands by the Egyptian pro-democracy movement for President Hosni Mubarak to step down from his post.

Anti-government protesters took to the streets of Egyptian cities for a 12th onsecutive day to force Mubarak to quit.

This year’s edition of the Munich Security Conference has been overshadowed by the political unrest in Egypt, topping the agenda since the high-profile meeting kicked off Friday.
