New Delh: The Congress Thursday rebuked former Haryana police chief S.P.S. Rathore, convicted of molesting teenager Ruchika Girhotra, for invoking the name of the country’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru in his remark to media that he would “smile more”.
Congress spokesman Manish Tewari said the former DGP was “mentally sick”.
Replying to queries about Rathore’s remark, Tewari said the remark was the “result of this mental sickness”.
“The authorities should send him for a mental check-up,” he said.
He said that party condemns Rathore’s invoking the name of a national icon in defence of his behaviour with the media.
“How could he even think of a comparison with Nehru?” Tiwari asked.
Breaking his silence Wednesday for the first time since he was convicted in the Ruchika molestation case, Rathore taunted the media saying that he will “smile more” if the media tried to harm him.
Fighting legal battles and fresh cases slapped on him by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Haryana police, Rathore, whose smirk after his conviction in the 19-year-old molestation case became the butt of ridicule in the media, said: “You want to know the secret of this smile, I will tell you.”
He said he had learnt the lesson to smile in adversity from Pandit Nehru. “If you succeed to harm me more, I will smile more.”
