AWMELA team visits Adv Shahid Azmi’s village to offer condolences

Azamgarh: A team of Association for Welfare, Medical, Educational and Legal Assistance, Azamgarh, in the leadership of its president Dr Javed Akhtar visited Adv Shahid Azmi’s village Ibrahimpur in the district yesterday to offer their condolences to the bereaved family members. Adv Azmi was murdered in his Mumbai office on February 11. The police are yet to arrest culprits.

Dr. Javed Akhtar along with AWMELA members went to Adv Shahid Azmi’s village Ibrahimpur (near Mubarakpur). Brilliant and fearless young lawyer Shahid was doing a great service to the beleaguered community. Out of four arrested boys (in Mumbai) of Mubarakpur, he was successful in getting acquitted two. Recently, Shahid’s association, as Jamiat-e-Ulama Hind legal counsel, with Batla House seemingly fake encounter accused languishing in Ahmedabad jail was a great relief to the people in Azamgarh, in particular, to Dr. Javed Akhtar and others involved in organizing the legal battle at different places in the country.

News of Shahid’s murder spread like wildfire in Azamgarh and the initial reaction was of shock and disbelief. In order to condole on the sad demise of a great asset of not only Muslim community but also of all downtrodden and oppressed people, Dr. Javed Akhtar paid a visit to Ibrahimpur. He met related grandfather and uncle of Shahid. Mr. Neyaz Ahmad, who is related as grandfather of Shahid Azmi was to leave for Bombay on 15th February. Danish, who is related to Shahid as maternal uncle and who is the Maha Pradhan of Ibrahimpur was extremely angry at the lack of security to his nephew in Bombay in spite of previous threats. Danish told about Shahid’s education in Tihar jail and his extreme dedication to the cause of serving the oppressed and poor people who could not afford legal expenses.
