Do advocacy work, Ali Anwar tells Indian Muslims in the US
By Kashif-ul-Huda, TwoCircles.net,
Boston: Ali Anwar Ansari, a Member of Parliament (MP) of India, encouraged Indian Muslims living in the United States to take part in advocacy work using modern methodologies. He said, “Spoken from the United States your voice will carry more weight.” He was speaking at a function organized by the Boston chapter of advocacy group Indian Muslims Council-USA (IMC-USA) on Sunday.
“In India, Muslims are losing political representation,” said Mr. Ansari. He explained, in the present Lok Sabha, only 30 Muslim MPs are there, which is a reduction from 39 Muslims in the last Lok Sabha. Out of 543 Lok Sabha seats, 119 are reserved for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC). Since Muslims are excluded from SC list by the Presidential Order of 1950, this is a major source of Muslim political disenfranchisement. Similarly, 1050 Assembly constituencies are reserved and out of bound for Muslims.

Though there are many Muslims who have the same historical and social background as Dalit Hindus but these Dalit Muslims have been excluded from getting the benefits provided for the SCs.
Ali Anwar who became Rajya Sabha MP in 2006 also shed light on his march from journalism to launching a movement for the benefit of Dalit Muslims. He along with others founded All India Pasmanda Muslim Mahaz to champion the cause of Dalit Muslims whom he calls “Pasmanda” or downtrodden.
During the well-attended program, Ali Anwar explained his opposition to Women’s Reservation Bill and support to the Central Madrasa Board Bill.
He also said that we have to look within our own community and see how we can reform ourselves. Problems of casteism exist among Muslims that we must recognize and reform. “The work of reform is not for one day, but needs to be done on a regular basis,” said Mr. Ansari.
He asked the audience members to use their professional training and intellectual capacity in solving problems of Muslims in India.
He ended his speech by encouraging Indian Muslims living in the United States to play a bigger role in helping the Muslims of India. “Muslims always do politics of emotions though politics require brain and not heart.”
President of Boston chapter of IMC-USA Seema Salim and Dr. Omar Khalidi also spoke on the occasion.
Mr. Ansari was in the United States to participate in United Nations General Assembly session in New York. On Saturday, he attended another IMC event organized by its Maryland-Virginia chapter in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Ali Anwar should re-think his "Pasmanda Muslim" strategy
When Ali Anwar started the Pasmanda Muslim movement in Bihar,to emancipate the Muslim Dalits I thought it was a very good movement. For several years he did excellent grassroots work to highlight the many problems of the Muslim Dalits. To some extent his complaint against the ashraf (upper class) Muslims that they are unfair against Muslim Dalits is valid.
In none of the Muslim universities, colleges, schools any preference in admission or in meeting educational expenses is given to Dalit Muslims. Muslim leaders are not campaigning enough to have Govt give reservation to Dalit Muslims, the same as to Hindu Dalits.
After fighting for some time for Pasmanda Muslims, Ali Anwar came under the influence of Nitish Kumar, who is a partner of BJP. Nitish won the election in Bihar three years ago. Since then by giving promises and good jobs to the leaders of the Pasmanda Muslim movement, Nitish has compromised the movement. He arranged to have Ali Anwar become a Rajya Sabha member (MP). With that the movement for Dalits has slowed down much. The Nitish Govt gave some cosmetic help to Dalit Muslims and no more.
Ali Anwar had a great opportunity and potential to uplift Dalit Muslims. But regrettably with offers of high positions and money, he and his movement are being compromised. Ali Anwar needs to re-think his strategy and go back to the earlier roots of his Pasmanda Muslim movement. Rather than fight against Ashraf Muslims, he should fight the Govt to get reseevation for Dalit Muslims in Govt jobs and colleges.
Dear Kashif: appropos your
Dear Kashif: appropos your comments, Mr. Ali Anwar, MP was a part of the delgation to the UNGeneral Assembly meet in NY. if you believe that he has suspect credentials, you have to give concrete details than make allegations. I am neither agreeing nor disagreeing with your views. I am just saying that you should send some pointers so that those who are unaware of Mr. Ali Anwar's views, political leanings and affiliations become more educated.
Most politicians have to make compromises at some point in their lives to see how they can better serve their communities. Even Muslims in India do not follow one party singlehandedly. When Muslims will have one platform and a storng leadership, they will be heard in India and elsewhere. We have to earn it...
with no malice.
A wellwisher
I think Ali Anwar is not dividing muslims
I don't think he dividing muslims in india based on the religion.
Nobody can deny that Muslims different status on economic grounds.
In Bombay poorest man is muslim and richest man is also muslim.
I think Ali Anwar is saying we need to give to poor muslims first.
There is nothing wrong in saying that economically backward muslim needs first right than who are well.
I think we need think strategically and work smart to uplifting backwards muslims.
-Nazeer.
Ali Anwar's hipocracy
Ali Anwar has done nothing more than dividing Indian Muslims into Backward & forward and doing cheap politics to become MP in Rajyasabha on a Party's ticket which is asoociate of BJP - the muslim slaughtering party.
American muslims should understand first that what is the background of the person to whom they r inviting.
People like Ali Anwar, Arif Mohammad Khan, Shahanwaz Hussain are doing politics for their own individual benefits. They always proved to be dangerous and harmful for Indian Muslims.
Ali Anwar's hipocracy
Kashif, You are absolutely wrong about Mr Ali Anwar Ansari. If you heard the part where I introduced him to the audience, you may remember that I said that of all the people who knew my late father (that includes VP of India, numerous MPs, Ministers, Governors, judges and IAS officers), I found Mr Ali Anwar Ansari to be the one who made a very positive impression on me. Please elaborate how you lump him with the likes of Arif Mohammad Khan and others who jumped from party to party for their political gains.
