Social work through “Sangini”

Azamgarh: Dr. Madhuri Singh is the daughter-in-law of a doctor couple. Both her in-laws, Dr. Rajdeo Singh and Mrs. (Dr.) K.R. Singh were doctors practicing in Azamgarh. Her husband, Dr. Kishore Singh, is a Pathologist and runs Singh Diagnostic Centre in Azamgarh city. Mrs. Madhuri is blessed by two children: elder son, has done M.Tech from USA and is working in Pittsburgh, USA; daughter is pursuing M.Sc in Counselling Psychology from Christ Church College, Bangalore.

Dr. Madhuri Singh, a Ph.D. in Political Science from DAV College, Azamgarh (affiliated to Purvanchal University, Jaunpur) was born in village Ramgarh which now falls in District Chandauli. As her father was Manager of a Private firm in Calcutta, she received initial education in Calcutta. They shifted to Varanasi when Naxal violence started and therefore, Madhuri did his M.A from Banaras Hindu University.



Dr. Madhuri Singh started an organization “Sangini” in November, 2000 and she is now the Secretary of this organization. “Sangini” was started to solve women related problems. It cared for their economic upliftment and inculcated in them a vision. Dr. Singh and others worked for a better future of all kinds of women and alleviated the sufferings of both urban and rural womenfolk.

Dr. Singh in this interview talks about her effort in educating women towards personal hygiene through building toilets. She also helped women folk involved in “bidi”(country made cigarettes) through construction of a shelter that also acts as a workplace. She also talked about her effort in fund raising and her own austerity to help deprived womenfolk.

A significant contribution of “Sangini” was the financial help extended to a Urdu poet Hadi Azmi in getting his work published. Dr. Singh through her organization helped build a house for Hadi and helped him get his daughter married.

Dr. Madhuri Singh believes in the “Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb” and is ever eager to help those in need, in particular womenfolk. Though her political affiliation is with BJP but she is supportive of BJP’s effort for equal opportunity and equal law to all the citizens of India. She is a member of State working committee of the party.
