Recalling Jamshedpur riots of 1979

Recalling Jamshedpur riots of 1979

By Kashif-ul-Huda, TwoCircles.net

This month in the year 1979, the Hindu-Muslim violence in Jamshedpur took the lives of 108 people. The number of dead could have easily been 114, but as it turned out, my family and I survived the mayhem, to write about it thirty years later.

This unfortunate event occurred when I was at the tender age of five, however the memory of it is etched in my mind and it is one of the clearest early memories that I have. Thirty whole years later, and the images of the violence that occurred are still extremely vivid for me.

Earlier that day on April 11th, the tension in the air was heavy with anticipation of something horrible to come. Somehow my mother was able to sense it and on the morning of Ramnawami she went with her brother and my two little sisters to a nearby Muslim neighbourhood (Golmuri). My father being the idealist was confident that nothing would happen. In case something did happen, he had formed a group of Hindus and Muslims to defend the houses against any mob attacks whether they be Hindus or Muslims.

I and my brother, who was two years older than me, stayed behind though my mother and sisters had left early that morning. As the day went on, the small crowd that was outside on the streets talking amongst themselves began to grow. My brother started getting uncomfortable and by lunch time we convinced our father to take us to Golmuri where my mother had gone earlier. While we were there, eating lunch at Uncle Kamaal's house, we heard shouts that the rioting had started.

We went out quickly to see what was happening and saw smoke rising in the air in the distance. My memories after that are vivid but in pieces. I remember that we were staying in a house full of women and children. I remember not wanting to eat the food as it was only half-cooked. This was my introduction to life as a refugee at a very tender age. I remember going on the roof at night to see what appeared to be the whole city burning up in flames. I also remember someone warning us not to go up there and stand there to avoid the risk of being an easy target for someone to shoot at. I remember that I was not able to see my father much and being very scared the entire time.

Years later I would find out that our house in the Tinplate area of Jamshedpur was a refuge for all the local Muslims after all the Hindus of the joint front slowly left. My father, who was back in Golmuri the next day to drop off some supplies, got stuck there as the curfew was clamped. He couldn't go back and Muslims of Tinplate feeling besieged went to the Tinplate factory to ask for help but instead they were brutally murdered by their own colleagues. My father survived this tragedy by not being able to leave the area.

Our house was looted but we were one of the lucky ones. Others had all their belongings burnt. Months later, we moved to a new area called Agrico colony, across the street from another Muslim neighbourhood of Bhalubasa. These freshly white-washed houses failed to hide the black soot of the fires that was set in them. We didn't know if anyone had died in those houses but signs of loot and plunder were clearly visible.

Over the years, I met many people with their own tales of that horrible time. I will meet a woman with burn marks on her body, a survivor of the ambulance that was doused in flames with the intention to kill all inside. Everyday on our way to school, we will see the charred ambulance parked outside the Police Station.

Of the 108 dead, 79 were Muslims and 25 Hindus. There were many injured and many who lost everything. Jamshedpur is an industrial town dominated by Tata factories where many residents of the town are employed. Most of the city is company property and people of all faiths live together in company quarters.

It is difficult to understand why this tragic event occured in a city so young where and with such a diverse population. Most of the residents are from different parts of undivided Bihar or other parts of India, and all were blue-collar workers trying to make a decent and honest living. Muslims werent the only ones who lost their lives, Hindus did too, so who really benefitted from this tragedy?

The person who single handedly took the entire city hostage that day in Jamshedpur, thirty years ago, was local legislator, Dinanath Pandey. Pandey, the person responsible for the riots, was awarded a seat in the Bihar assembly, twice after the incident. As BJP candidate he won elections as late as 1990. He made his seat a safe BJP seat. In the last two assembly elections, BJP won from there with over 50% of the total votes polled.

India goes to the polls to elect its representatives and decides who will run the country for the next five years. When we complain that the government doesn't do anything for us, or when we complain of goondas and criminals in politics, remember that we as voters put them there in the first place. People like Dinanath Pandey, with blood on their hands, have no place in any legislative body. Congress has done well by taking away party tickets from Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler, but it is the same party that ruled Andhra Pradesh when the Muslim youth of Hyderabad were illegally detained and tortured by the state police. They will not take any action until the public shows them how upset they are.

If the parties fail to take any action and continue to field these criminals, we the people have take the stand and refuse to vote in those with hate-filled agendas or a criminal history.

The only problem with this

The only problem with this article is that it fails to mention that the riots started after muslim extremists stoned the Ramnavmi procession.
Hence its a biased article propagating the prejudices of the author.

Communal violence in India

Dear Kashif
Thankyou for sharing such a difficult time of your life. I remember you all coming to us in Lucknow following that episode. We were very concerned about Munne Abbi as he stayed back.
Ammi tells us of the time in Ranchi, when I was just one years old and there was a similar attack on Muslim areas. We survived by grace of God coming very close to being attacked. It used to happen very often during the sixties and seventies, till the media suddenly decided to report the Meerut killings of Muslim youth and suddenly India was aware. Unfortunately, it spread to Ahmedabad in the Eighties where it was revived by Modi recently.
As we have learnt again and again, the only winners of such carnage are the politicians who orchestrate it. they use the emotions of the gullible public to stoke up hatred and direct it towards their target. We have recently seen this in the training of the Al Qaida and how they use the violence against the muslims in Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan and Kashmir etc to enlist young minds to do their dirty deeds. Such attacks should be condemned by us as much as the violence that we saw around us as kids.

Right wing of the congress

Could someone please anaylyze if there exists a "right wing of the congress party" or existed in the past. What was thier role in the riots that kept happening for 70 years in India?

Who are they?

Same way, does BJP have a left wing in it?

There ought to be...

All the Same

All these political parties are the same. they do not care the cost of human lives. for them its only votes and winning elections, no matter who dies.

Right wing of Congress Party

I want someone to please write about the neo-cons / right wingers in Congress Party and Liberals in BJP (If there are any).

Let us see what their role was in these riots. I bet there is a right wing in congress. Who they are. We need to know.....

Shameless Party INC

I do not know Indian National Congress or Sangh Parivar ever confessed such killings and riots. We have lost hundreds of our children in the riots. The judicial system and para military forces were entirely colloborated with the hooligans and terrorists. PAC was the main culprit in the riots. Sangh Parivar, Police and Armed Forces killed thousands of Muslims in the Congress Rule.

Still that party never showed the manner to repent because they never felt sorrow. Shame Manmohan, Shame! Shame Soniya, Shame. Your inner is as dark as that of Varun son of meneka.

The congress shold open their eyes and face the reality. Not only Sikhs but other community also will become violent, if denied justice.

Muslims should unite politically. Though hundreds of 'Jamshedpur' happened in the past, still north Indians are still in darkness.

I am sure that no prophets will come to lead you, but you have to face the future.

For that you have to practice Islam, instead of Bahaism, Qadiyanism, Wahabisam, Maududism, Boraism, Ismailism, Sunnism, Shiaism etc. Join together with the Deen of Allah, that is Islam. No one can break the united Islam.

Prathiba- Muslims to blame for being kicked the world over.

Prathiba,

You say that Muslims have been killed by Congress, BJP etc etc. Evidently if most major political Parties are against Muslims the Muslims must also be at fault. Moreover, it is not in India alone that Muslims are getting kicked around. All Christian European Countries, America and even Iraq, PAK, Afghanistan, Gaza, Palestine etc etc are all places where Muslims are getting kicked. The Australian PM has even openly stated that Muslims can leave Australia if they are NOT happy there.

The same is what India also has to say to UNHAPPY INDIAN MUSLIMS. GO TO PAKISTAN OR BANGLADESH. THESE TWO COUNTRIES WERE CARVED OUT OF INDIA SPECIFICALLY FOR INDIAN MUSLIMS WHO FEARED THAT THEY WOULD NOT GET JUSTICE IN HINDU MAJORITY INDIA. If some of the Indian Muslims feel that their parents made a mistake in 1947 by staying back in India, it is not late to rectify the mistake!!! Go -Go Go and enjoy the freedom offered by your promised land for which the Indian Muslims have strived so hard!!!!

Prathiba- Muslims to blame for being kicked the world over.

Mr Anonymous==> Please take it out of your "Bajrangi" mind that Muslims will leave India. We are proud that our ancestars took the decision to stay back in India and not go to Pakistan or Bangladesh. We are not just Indians BUT very much INDIANS.
If today, India is still united it is due to people like Pratibha who understand that Muslims have equal rights in India and consider us INDIANS.Needless to say that I have more hindu friends than Muslims and we have always been together.
While I do not hate you Mr Anonymous,I am upset that you cannot see the larger picture and are still committing the same mistake what some of our ancestars did more than 60 years ago.I also accept that Muslims have also made some mistakes but please try and find out what lead to this hatred.

Pratibha==> You are correct that Muslims do not have the political unity and are thus treated as vote banks by different political parties.

In any General or state election the most important criterion for choice by Muslims is "Security".While I think Muslims should change this and replace this with "Development" as mere providing security would just keep us alive but not make us strong to stand on our feet and take justice.Muslims should also join the police, govt and military services of the nations and not keep themselves alienated from them.

I was born and brought up in Jamshedpur and though I have moved out of this beautiful Steel City more than 10 years ago,the very mention of its name makes me nostalgic.I was also a kid in 1979 when these riots took place and have horrific memories of the time.We were in Dhatkidih/Kadma area and have witnessed the situations and the torture by the police on Muslims.

While the memories would always haunt us , I think it is time we should move on and take lessons from the past and see that nothing similar happen in the present and future.

Muslims have Full Right in India - Prathiba

At least use some name Mr.'anonymous', when writting and addressing someone.

India is the land of Indians. All have equal rights. And you have no right to say "Go. go" to anyone. It proves your cheap quality.

Communal riots happening in India are impossible to compare with Iraq and Afganistan. Palestinian and Gaza are fighting for Freedom or for Land.

Try to understand world politics and then write some comments. If you need advice, I will be happy to provide the same. PRATHIBA

shame on congress

assalam alaikum, Dear brothers and sisters, it is true that congress party is a silent witness to most of the violence muslim has faced after independence, it is hippocratic. they say they are secular, but they always watch muslims being victimised and shed crocodile tears, there are so many instances.WHAT IS THE POINT IN SHEDDING CROCDILE TEARS AFTER THE MOSQUE IS RAZED, WHAT IS THE POINT IN SHEDDING CROCODILE TEARS AFTER WOMEN WERE BEING RAPED, MEN WERE SLAUGHTERED, BABIES IN FOETUS WERE MURDERED IN GUJARAT, MEN REPRODUCTIVE ORGANS CUT AND MUTILATED, I AM SORRY IF YOU THINK THIS IS PROVOCATIVE, BUT MIND YOU IT IS A HARSH REALITY, MALLIANA MASSACRE AND JAMSHEDPUR MASSACRES WERE PAC'S WILFULLY SHOOOTING MUSLIMS BY CHOICE. Muslims should truly follow ISLAM IN LETTER AND SPIRIT. ISLAM IS PEACE, ISLAM IS SECULAR, ISLAM HATES HATRED, ISLAM TEACHES TO LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR, DO NOT EAT YOUR STOMACH FULL, THINK OF YOUR NEIGHOBOUR,SEE WHETHER HE HAD HIS MEAL OR IS HE STARVING, SMILE IS A CHARITY, SMILE WHEN YOU SEE YOUR NEIGHB OURS, DO NOT FROWN, ATTTEND THE FUNCTIONS OF YOUR NEIGHBOURS WHICHEVER RELIGIONS THEY BELONG TO. NEVER BORROW OR LEND IN INTEREST, USURY IS FORBIDDEN, NEVER TROUBLE YOUR NEIGHBOURS, BE GOOD TO ALLSO ON AND SO FORTH.........NEVER TRUST ANYONE BUT ALLAH, ALLAHU AKBAR ALLAHU AKBAR ALLAHU AKBAR LA ILAHA ILLALLAHU ALLAHU AKBAR ALLAHU AKBAR WA LILLAHIL HAMD.
