New Delhi : Urdu has been accorded the status of second language in the capital after Hindi, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said here Thursday.

Speaking at a convention of Urdu teachers from seven north Indian states, Dikshit said: "Our government has given status of second language to Urdu in the capital city."
"The language is being liked by large number of people though some people are not able to read and write Urdu but they really love this language as this has been nurtured in our country," she said at the convention organised at the Jamia Milia Islamia.
Around 200 Urdu teachers and scholars from Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir were here for the convention.
"There is a need for imparting modern education in madrassas apart from traditional education," she said, adding that part-time Urdu teachers have been appointed and their remuneration enhanced.
"There would be no dearth of funds for promotion of Urdu language as this language is associated with the composite culture of Delhi," Dikshit said.
