Husain to move apex court over property attachment
By IANS Mumbai : Controversial painter M.F. Husain, who now lives in a sort of exile shuttling between London and Dubai, will move the Supreme Court against the order of a Haridwar court asking the police to attach his properties in Mumbai, his lawyer said Monday. Husain's lawyer Akhil Sibal, said: "Very soon we are going to appeal in the Supreme Court." The Haridwar court had ordered Mumbai Police to attach his first floor flat in Jolly Maker-III at Cuffe Parade here. On Sunday, the Mumbai Police had started the attachment proceedings and pasted a notice on the door of his flat. The court passed the order after the artist repeatedly failed to appear before it over a case pertaining to his two paintings - "Bharatmata" and "Krishna" - alleged to be semi-nude and as offending religious sensibilities. A lawyer, Arvind Srivastava, had filed a petition against him in 2005 over the paintings.Like the Haridwar case, a few other cases against the painter are also registered in different courts across the country.
Sibal, who is based in New Delhi, said that he had learnt about the court order from media reports and the next logical step would be to move the apex court.
